This Middle Tweed beat has one of the most magnificent settings possible. It lies opposite the view point made famous by Sir Walter
Scott which is still much visited by tourists and photographers alike. The beat lies far below this hill, in the same wooded gorge
as Bemersyde, its opposite neighbour. Like Bemersyde, it is almost completely secluded from the outside world, being one of the few
Tweed beats not to have a road alongside it.
The fishing includes one-and-a-half miles of the right bank with seven named pools. Nearly all of it is fishable and it copes well
with low water, whilst still retaining interesting fishing in higher conditions. Some knowledge of Spey or roll casting is needed to
fish the middle of the beat and you should be a reasonable walker and wader. There is a good access road to the hut (and toilet) on
the bottom half of the beat.
In the autumn it is fished by four rods in two beats, upper and lower, which are alternated each lunchtime, and each pair of rods
will have one gillie looking after them.
In the spring and summer three rods are fished which may include a house rod and/or a syndicate rod. The syndicate rods fish on a
one-day-a-week basis from 1st February to 17th September. The gillie will be available to show the river but may not be full time
during this part of the season.
Please note that from 2006 fishing on this beat is fly-only throughout the season. However, during the spring and summer months the
gillie will have discretion to allow a limited amount of spinning only if the conditions warrant it.
