Horncliffe's fishing consists of two-and-a-half miles of single bank fishing on the right (south) bank of the Tweed. The upper limit
of the fishing is at Norham Castle and the lower limit is at Horncliffe Mill Burn mouth, approximately six miles inland from
Berwick-upon-Tweed. The fishing is divided into four beats.
Horncliffe, like the adjoining Ladykirk fishings, is essentially a low water beat. This year most of the fish were caught whilst the
river was running at heights of between one and two feet.
The lower water below St Thomas's Island is reached by high spring tides and, although this may affect the fishing, it has the great
advantage that in low water conditions fish will build up throughout the whole length of the fishing. Grilse and sea trout can be
caught in the early morning and in the evening in the hottest summer days. Tenants are allowed to fish outside the normal hours
provided they clear this with the ghillie first.
Each of the four beats is fished by two rods. A rota system operates with rods moving down a beat at lunchtime. The riverside track
provides access to beats 2, 3 and 4. Beat 1 is best approached by car (parking at Norham Castle) or alternatively it can be reached
on foot.
This year two syndicate rods (fishing the same day each week) will be let for the whole of the season.
A boat is provided although almost all the fish are caught from the bank. Long stretches of water offer easily wadeable fishing over
smooth gravel. Other stretches with rocky shelves are more difficult to wade but here the fish lie quite close into the bank.
A comfortable fishing hut at the end of beat 2 is equipped with coal & gas fires, small refrigerator and gas cooking ring, together
with barbecue facilities and adequate parking spaces.
With sufficient notice an additional ghillie can be arranged at a cost of £50 per day (payable directly).
